Towards 2010 Tiger summit

Posted on 29 January 2011

Several meetings were held in the capital, Thimphu from 31st May to 5th June, 2010 to help the government of Bhutan come up with concrete plans for Tiger pledges to be showcased during the Tiger summit to be held in November, 2010 in Russia. 13 Tiger range countries inclusive of Bhutan are in the process of developing their own individual recovery programs.

WWF Bhutan along with Global Tiger initiative (World Bank) held series of consultative meetings with government counterparts. The outcome of the meeting was prioritized and complied into a document summary that will be taken to Bali, Indonesia for a pre-summit meeting prior to the grand summit in Russia.

The 8 year strategic tiger program will work towards the global goal of doubling tiger populations by 2022. In line of this target, the program also wishes to address the anti tiger issues, first nationally and then regionally. The program also stressed on developing hard core information on the species and its distribution in the country which is otherwise non-existent. This will be achieved by using robust scientific interventions and timely monitoring.
