BT0858 Developing the Nature Study Center in Black Mountain NP

Project Summary: The Nature Study Center was conceived as a focal point for conservation education, training and research activities. Located at Khebethang, on the northern border of the Black Mountains National Park, the Nature Study Center will provide research and laboratory facilities for Bhutanese scientists, conservation personnel, students of Sherubtse College, NRTI and BFI, and nature clubs and school students. It will serve as a site for in-country training and educational programs, such as the annual Protected Areas Survey Techniques Workshop. Construction of the Center, which began in late 1993, was completed in 1996. A WWF consultant and a naturalist worked with a local artist to develop innovative displays and interpretation materials for the Center. The center was opened in November 1996. The Nature Study Center at Khebethang in the Black Mountains National Park will facilitate in-country research on natural resources to determine conservation needs and management methods, provide a facility for in-service training to meet the immediate demand for park staff, and enlist public support for the cause of conservation through education and interpretation courses held on site.
