EARTH HOUR 2025: GREEN TRANSITION - GREEN FUTURE
For Earth Hour Viet Nam 2025, WWF, in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), calls on individuals, businesses, and communities to join the “Green Transition – Green Future” movement, working together for a sustainable future for Viet Nam.
At 8:30 PM on March 22, 2025, the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment - Earth Hour returns for its 19th edition. Under the slogan “Switch off! Give an hour for Earth.”, Earth Hour 2025 calls on individuals, organisations, businesses, and governments worldwide to take collective action for our beloved planet.
As climate change becomes one of humanity’s greatest challenges, it is essential that we come together with a shared vision for a future where people and nature coexist in harmony. At the same time, each individual and organisation has their own way of “caring” for the Earth - by taking meaningful actions to protect our shared home.
Kirsten Schuijt, Director General of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), stated: “Earth Hour is a powerful reminder of the urgency to act while we still can. It is not just about switching off lights; it’s about switching on a global movement for change. By engaging individuals, communities, and businesses, we can create a collective force that drives real impact and inspires hope for a sustainable future.”
VIET NAM’S CONTEXT
Viet Nam is among the countries most vulnerable to climate-related disasters, ranking 13th among the most affected nations by extreme weather events between 2000 and 2019. Key sectors in Viet Nam, including agriculture and food security, natural ecosystems, biodiversity, water resources, public health, housing, and infrastructure, are highly vulnerable to climate change. According to World Bank estimates, due to climate change, Viet Nam suffered economic losses of over $10 billion (approximately 3.2% of GDP) in 2021–2022. Forecast models also indicate that by 2050, the total economic losses related to climate change could account for 12-14.5% of GDP annually.
Follow their statement “Commitments made, actions taken”, the Viet Nam government continues to reaffirm its strong commitment to achieving Net-zero emissions through bold, comprehensive, and sustainable economic and social transformations. The 2022 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) highlights Viet Nam’s vision and determination in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with targets of 15.8% (unconditional) and 43.5% (conditional) emission reductions by 2030 compared to the business-as-usual scenario.
EARTH HOUR IN VIET NAM
The year 2025 marks a significant milestone as Parties to the Paris Agreement are expected to submit their third updated NDCs, setting more ambitious climate targets to limit global temperature rise to below 1.5°C. Key efforts from Viet Nam include requiring greenhouse gas inventory and reduction planning for 2030 for large emission facilities, promoting renewable energy, developing Viet Nam’s carbon market, and advancing the green transition.
In alignment with this vision, WWF-Vietnam introduces “Green Transition - Green Future” suggestions, offering practical guidance to help individuals and businesses actively participate in the green transformation. Let’s start taking action today - because every small step contributes to shaping a sustainable future for all of us!
