Royal Meeting with Bhutan: Spreading the Message of Happiness, Nature, and Culture

Hanoi, August 20 – Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Tri, received His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Her Majesty Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck at the Melia Hotel in Ha Noi, as part of the Bhutanese Royal Couple’s State Visit to Viet Nam. Mr. Van Ngoc Thinh, CEO of WWF-Viet Nam, also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on nature conservation, sustainable development, and the preservation of cultural and spiritual values. Both parties particularly acknowledged the significance of the Sustainable Finance for Tiger Landscape Conference in Paro, Bhutan, in April 2024—a global initiative to mobilise sustainable financial resources for tiger and ecosystem conservation.

His Majesty the King of Bhutan expressed admiration for Viet Nam’s remarkable development in recent years, especially its achievements in industrialisation and GDP growth. He expressed confidence that Viet Nam will continue to rise as a prosperous nation with an increasingly important role in the region and the world.

The King also expressed his deep concern for safeguarding Bhutan’s historical, cultural, and spiritual values—especially those rooted in Buddhism—which are considered core elements of the nation’s identity, even amidst economic development. He emphasised the importance of international cooperation in protecting natural resources, citing the collaboration between Bhutan and India in conserving habitats for large wildlife species such as tigers and rhinoceroses.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri expressed his admiration for Bhutan—not only for its majestic landscapes and spiritual richness, but also for its leadership model that places people and nature at the heart of development. He affirmed: "Bhutan is not just a country with a high happiness index, it is a land of truly happy people, with an enduring legacy of culture and nature. Bhutan has many valuable lessons for us to learn."

He also highlighted the critical importance of forest conservation in Viet Nam’s strategy for biodiversity protection and climate change adaptation. He expressed his hope that in a future visit, Their Majesties would have the opportunity to explore one of Viet Nam’s primary forests or national parks, to experience firsthand the beauty and value of the country's natural heritage.

WWF received a powerful and inspiring message during the meeting from Her Majesty the Queen on Bhutan’s environmental mission, where humans live in harmony with nature. This sincere exchange reflected shared values of happiness, sustainability, and human-nature connection. Her Majesty expressed her commitment to supporting the efforts of WWF-Bhutan, WWF-Viet Nam, and WWF-US in conserving nature and biodiversity, while spreading awareness and fostering cross-border cooperation for the benefit of future generations.

On this occasion, WWF-Viet Nam CEO shared the organization's 30-year conservation and sustainable development journey in Viet Nam. As a symbolic gesture, a ceramic vase was presented to the King and Queen—featuring an image of a turtle and a landscape that reflects a 30-year life cycle: from birth, growth, exploration of nature, to returning to its birthplace for the first time to lay eggs. This turtle represents the journey of WWF’s 30 years of commitment to nature conservation in Viet Nam—a small gift, carrying a profound message of love for nature and sustainability.
