Sakhi Fish Sanctuary Run – 11.2 KM Successfully Completed on the Occasion of Earth Hour
March 28, 2026, Rajapur, Bardiya: On the occasion of the globally recognized environmental campaign Earth Hour, a competitive running event titled “Sakhi Fish Sanctuary Run – 11.2 KM” was successfully organized with the objective of raising public awareness on river conservation and aquatic biodiversity protection with the motto “Run for Healthier Planet” at Rajapur-3, Bardiya.
Earth Hour is an important global movement observed worldwide, where individuals, organizations, and communities demonstrate their commitment to combating climate change and promoting biodiversity conservation by switching off lights for one hour, inspiring global attention toward energy conservation, sustainable resource management, and the long-term health of the planet; aligned with this global initiative, the Sanctuary Run was conducted to promote environmental conservation alongside a healthy lifestyle, aiming to enhance community engagement in river protection, highlight the importance of aquatic life, and encourage the preservation of clean and sustainable river ecosystems.
The 11.2 KM distance of the run held symbolic significance, as it corresponds to the perimeter of the Sakhi Fish Sanctuary, the first fish sanctuary of Nepal, serving as a powerful representation to emphasize the importance of protecting aquatic habitats and conserving fish biodiversity.
The program commenced with an inauguration ceremony at 6:00 AM, followed by the start of the race at 6:30 AM from Rajapur Stadium, Rajapur-3, Bardiya.
The competition featured Open Men and Open Women categories, with enthusiastic participation from runners across different regions.

Narendra Dani: 2nd Place- 36 minute 40 seconds
Tek Bahadur Chand: 3rd Place- 37 minute 07 seconds

Kalpana Pant: 1st Place- 44 minute 24 seconds
Debaki Kumari Bam: 2nd Place- 44 minute 42 seconds
Apsara Bam Thakuri: 3rd Place- 49 minute 02 seconds
Tara Singh: 4th Place- 50 minute 45 seconds
The event adhered to eco-friendly practices by implementing a strict no-plastic policy, and emergency medical services were made available to ensure participant safety throughout the program.
This program was organized in collaboration with Sonaha Bikas Samaj, Dolphin Conservation Center, and WWF Nepal under the “Strengthening Communities’ Livelihood and Stewardship to conserve otters in Karnali” project funded by the UK government through the Darwin Initiative.
The successful completion of the Sanctuary Run marks a significant step toward fostering environmental responsibility and community participation in biodiversity conservation.
