To ensure that tree plantation efforts lead to the successful restoration of degraded forest areas, a new partnership model was launched in June this year. The model emphasizes post-plantation care and long-term tree survival.
Today, WWF-Bhutan signed an agreement with Desi High School to support the restoring and management of a two-hectare degraded forest adjacent to the school campus. As part of the Social Forestry Day celebrations in June, the school initiated the planting of fire-resistant and low-risk tree species like chirpine, oak and dogwood.

The five-year project is a collaboration between Desi High School, Thimphu Forest Division under Department of Forests and Park Services, and WWF-Bhutan.
By adopting the plantation area, the school will manage the site and ensure that the saplings survive. Under the project Desi High School is provided funding to cover costs related to installation of water tanks and fencing, procurement of saplings, and management of the area.
Thimphu district has the largest area of barren forest land in the country, covering 1,395 hectares. The primary causes of this degradation include forest fires, water scarcity, loss of vegetation, and land degradation.
The reforestation initiative is expected to help offset local emission and contribute to Bhutan’s commitment to remain carbon neutral for all times. It is also designed to foster environmental stewardship among students and the wider community.
