Bumthang DFO organized a day-long advocacy and awareness campaign in Chumey gewog, Bumthang to celebrate the Global Tiger Day with the communities of the gewog today.

The forest officials informed the public and community member on the ecological significance of tigers, threats and highlighted the role of communities in tiger protection. The awareness and education program reinforced the importance of continued engagement with people living in tiger landscapes to ensure survival of this iconic species while safeguarding community livelihood for peaceful coexistence.

With 21 tigers counted during the National Tiger Survey 2022, Bumthang DFO has the highest tiger numbers outside the protected areas. However, habitat fragmentation due to increased resource extraction and diminishing space for tigers, a potential cause for human-tiger conflicts, are challenge facing tiger conservation in Bumthang.

WWF-Bhutan is closely working with Bumthang DFO and the communities through Tiger Protection beyond Protected Areas of Bhutan project to ensure zero poaching incidents with reduced human-tiger conflicts in Bumthang.

This Global Tiger Day, we could highlight the role of communities living in critical landscape such as Bumthang for the survival of tigers and to secure the livelihood of the people.

On the Global Tiger Day, WWF-Australia launched 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 in partnership with the Tigers Alive Initiative and Tiger Conservation Coalition.

This is the first fund of its kind, focused entirely on investing in bold, new solutions to protect wild tigers and the well-being of communities living with them.

The Innovation Fund comes a year after the Paro Statement $1B commitment made last year in Bhutan during the Sustainable Finance for Tiger Landscapes Conference.

WWF-Australia has committed $1M to kickstart the Innovation Fund effort and are now inviting innovators, conservationists, community leaders, and entrepreneurs to submit their ideas.

Through the fund, WWF will be seeking to identify, pilot, and scale breakthrough solutions that can transform how we protect tigers and the landscapes they call home.
