Inspiring the next generation of snow leopard Guardians

Rangers from Tarialan soum organized an educational session for first-to fourth-grade students who live in the school dormitory. Many of these children grow up in landscapes that are part of the snow leopard’s natural habitat, yet few have had the opportunity to learn about this elusive predator in depth.

Young students in the remote mountain community of Tarialan soum, Uvs province gathered in their school dormitory for a special experience that connected them to one of the most iconic animals of Mongolia’s high mountains: the snow leopard.

Rangers from Tarialan soum organized an educational session for first-to fourth-grade students who live in the school dormitory. Many of these children grow up in landscapes that are part of the snow leopard’s natural habitat, yet few have had the opportunity to learn about this elusive predator in depth.

During the session, the children watched a documentary about snow leopard produced by WWF-Mongolia. The film opened a window into the secretive world of the snow leopard—showing its behavior, the rugged mountain habitats it depends on, and the wild prey that sustain it.

After the screening, rangers led an engaging discussion, answering the children’s questions and sharing stories from their work protecting wildlife in the surrounding mountains. Curious and excited, the students learned why snow leopards are important for healthy ecosystems and why their protection depends on local communities. Tarialan soum lies within one of the few landscapes where the “Lord of the mountains” still roams. By introducing children to snow leopard conservation at an early age, WWF-Mongolia and local rangers are helping cultivate a new generation that understands the value of living alongside this rare and magnificent species.

For these young students, the experience was more than a film screening, it was the beginning of a lifelong connection with the wildlife that shares their homeland.
