Pine seed collection drives forest restoration in Eastern Mongolia
WWF-Mongolia is actively collaborating with the administration of the Onon-Balj National Park (OBNP) to protect forests and their resources. In particular, pine cone collection and seed preparation activities began in 2011, and since 2017, this activity has been carried out continuously every year. According to experts, between 2017 and 2025, a total of 77.9 kg of seeds were extracted from 9,530 kg of pine cones.

In particular, pine cone collection and seed preparation activities began in 2011, and since 2017, this activity has been carried out continuously every year. According to experts, between 2017 and 2025, a total of 77.9 kg of seeds were extracted from 9,530 kg of pine cones.
As a result, reforestation has been successfully conducted on 5 hectares of land in Dadal soum, Khentii province located in the buffer zone of the protected area—using seedlings grown from locally collected seeds. This reforested area has since been officially incorporated into the state forest fund.
The collection of pine cones and preparation of seeds plays a significant role in building seedling reserves for reforestation efforts under the national “Billion Trees” initiative, launched by the President of Mongolia. As of 2026, more than 100,000 seedlings aged 2–5 years have been prepared in OBNP.
Furthermore, the OBNP is one of Mongolia’s key regions for pine forest resources. Therefore, establishing a sustainable seed reserve is crucial not only for the region but also for protecting the country’s forest ecosystem and genetic resources at the national level.
