For reducing conflict between human and snow leopard
WWF-Mongolia’s specialists reported that nine local herders households that had lost quite many heads of livestock during snow leopard attacks were selected and provided with protection mesh fences. Before having the protection fences on their winter settlements, these family members were unable to sleep during nights shifted in guarding. As the protection fences were put onsite, they are able to sleep at night without any worries about losing their livestock at snow leopard attacks.
The protection fence project was implemented in some sub-provinces of Western Mongolia in 2019.
Unenbaatar L., a herder of Darvi sub-province of Govi-Altai province, said: “herders build their livestock shelters close to or next to natural rocks. In such cases, the snow leopards easily enter the livestock shelters through the rocks. There were quite many cases of livestock loss recorded in the past: these herders used to guard their herds and to be unable to sleep during winter nights. Thanks to the protection meshes on their livestock shelters, the herders are able to stay without any fear of losing their animals during nights. The herders know that they must do quality maintenance in their protection fences in order to ensure their reliable use in the long run”.
Thanks to the protection fences, the snow leopard attack cases have significantly reduced, therby contributing to reduced conflicts between human and snow leopard.
