Local herders are pleased with initiative to newly create natural water collecting ponds
WWF-Mongolia, in collaboration with local authorities and communities, newly created two animal-friendly natural water collecting ponds on Darvi Mountain Range. Local herders are pleased with this initiative considered it as one of most useful options to reduce competitiveness of domestic and wild animals for open water access within the Mountain Range.
To assist in resolution of some of these problems, WWF-Mongolia, in collaboration with local authorities and communities, newly created two animal-friendly natural water collecting ponds on Darvi Mountain Range. Local herders are pleased with this initiative considered it as one of most useful options to reduce competitiveness of domestic and wild animals for open water access within the Mountain Range. WWF-Mongolia’s specialists underline that overlapping of wildlife and domestic herd water access has been immediately reduced to 60-70 per cent within the Mountain Range, in comparing to the previous practices therein. So, the wildlife populations do not need to leave or move away from their habitats and ranges into new areas. In addition, the newly created natural water ponds show many positive advantages such as creating favourable plant growing conditions and improving soil quality within their surrounding areas, thereby contributing to keeping ecological balance within the Range.
